Scientific knowledge, data and expertise must be universally accessible, and their benefits shared by all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISC advocates for equity and inclusivity in the practice of science and in opportunities for scientific education and capacity development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mission&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the Council is to be the&nbsp;<strong>global voice for science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council seeks to provide a powerful and credible global voice that is respected in both the public and policy domains and within the scientific community. It will use that voice to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>i. Speak for the value of all science and the need for evidence-informed understanding and decision-making at all levels, from local to global;<br>ii. Stimulate and support international, interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly among Members of the Council, on scientific research and scholarship on issues of global concern;<br>iii. Articulate scientific knowledge on issues of global concern in the public and policy domains;<br>iv. Promote and assist science diplomacy, particularly where it advances the common good and addresses global challenges;<br>v. Promote the continued and equal advancement of scientific rigour, creativity and relevance in all parts of the world;<br>vi. Assist the scientific community and relevant stakeholders in their respective roles in the conduct of science and in the face of the evolution of science systems;<br>vii. Defend and promote the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/what-we-do\/freedoms-and-responsibilities-of-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free and responsible practice of science<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we define science&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word science is used to describe the systematic organization of knowledge that can be rationally explained and reliably applied.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This definition of science includes natural and social science \u2013 which remain the ISC\u2019s primary focus areas \u2013 as well as the humanities, medical, health, computer and engineering sciences. The ISC uses this shorthand because there is no single word or phrase in English to adequately describe this knowledge community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ISC Members&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISC\u2019s unique network of over 250 institutional <a href=\"\/members\/online-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Members<\/strong><\/a> provides the foundation for its work. A core part of the ISC\u2019s mission is to create opportunities for Members to participate in important scientific conversations and activities, share their contributions at the international level and connect with other Members and access influential networks worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISC also co-sponsors various science initiatives and programmes &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/members\/affiliated-bodies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Affiliated Bodies<\/a> &#8211; which are part of the ISC membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Learn more about <\/em><a href=\"\/members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>membership<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impact&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By bringing together scientific experts and resources, the ISC encourages and coordinates meaningful international action on issues of scientific and public importance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Browse our work by <a href=\"\/themes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Themes<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"\/our-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Activities<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISC is <a href=\"\/about-us\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>headquartered<\/strong><\/a> in Paris, with Regional Focal Points in <strong><a href=\"\/about-us\/asia-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asia and the Pacific<\/a> <\/strong>and <a href=\"\/about-us\/latin-america-and-caribbean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Latin America and the Caribbean<\/strong><\/a>, and an office at the <strong><a href=\"\/profile\/morgan-seag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations in New York<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operating under the ISC\u2019s <a href=\"\/publications\/statutes-and-rules-of-procedure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Statutes and Rules of Procedure<\/strong><\/a>, the Council\u2019s <a href=\"\/about-us\/governance\/governing-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Governing Board<\/strong><\/a> provides scientific and strategic leadership, and receives advice on key aspects of its work from a number of<a href=\"\/about-us\/governance\/committees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>Advisory Bodies<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding and finances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council\u2019s principal source of core funding is dues from its Members, supplemented by a grant from the Government of France, the ISC\u2019s host country.
