Convened during the <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/hlpf-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)<\/a> on 15 July at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the event offered a space for reflection and featured a mobilized community of practice \u2013 scientists, diplomats, and thought leaders actively seeking new ways to co-create solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by the <strong>International Science Council (ISC)<\/strong>, the <strong>Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)<\/strong>, the <strong>Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)<\/strong>, the <strong>United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),<\/strong> and the <strong>UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)<\/strong>, Science Day 2025 brought together over a dozen speakers and a large, diverse audience for an open dialogue. This year\u2019s theme \u2013 <em>Unlocking Tomorrow\u2019s Solutions, Today<\/em> \u2013 resonated strongly in a moment where only <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/07\/1165388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">35% of SDG targets are on track or showing moderate progress<\/a>, and yet the demand for transformative action has never been greater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src='https:\/\/cdnapisec.kaltura.com\/p\/2503451\/embedPlaykitJs\/uiconf_id\/49754663?iframeembed=true&#038;entry_id=1_lf4kw4np&#038;config[playback]={\"audioLanguage\":\"en\"}&#038;config[ui]={\"locale\":\"en\"}' style=\"width: 528px; height: 297px\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozAllowFullScreen frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer *; autoplay *; encrypted-media *; gyroscope *; picture-in-picture *\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webtv.un.org\/en\/asset\/k15\/k15nfmlkdf\">Watch the UN Web TV recording<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transdisciplinary knowledge is real, necessary \u2013 and still structurally constrained\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Across all case studies and panels, a central message emerged: transdisciplinary approaches are no longer optional \u2013 they are foundational. It must be human-centered.\u201d <\/em>His message set the stage for the discussions that followed, anchoring them in the recognition that scientific practice must evolve to meet the complexities of today\u2019s interconnected challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening the case study session, <strong>James Waddell<\/strong> (ISC) pointed out that scientific knowledge is not the issue. \u201c<em>Conversations around the SDGs often go one way \u2013 not because knowledge is lacking, but because the channels between science and policy are missing or broken<\/em>,\u201d he said. \u201c<em>We must focus on building interfaces, not just delivering evidence<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Mary Blair<\/strong> (American Museum of Natural History) delivered a compelling presentation on Indigenous science in the Arctic, grounded in her own heritage as a descendant of Sami reindeer herders. She described a model of translatable transdisciplinary science, integrating satellite data with traditional herding practices. \u201c<em>This is not about adding Indigenous knowledge as an appendix<\/em>,\u201d she emphasized. \u201c<em>It\u2019s about redesigning science to reflect knowledge that\u2019s already here \u2014 and already working<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blair made a strong case for reconfiguring the systems that currently hinder such integration. She advocated for new incentives that would support transdisciplinary research across academic institutions, underlined the importance of establishing legally binding agreements before conducting research in Indigenous territories, and called for the full inclusion of Indigenous Peoples as central actors in global efforts such as the upcoming 5<sup>th<\/sup> International Polar Year 2032\u201333. But alongside these proposals, Blair pointed to a series of persistent challenges \u2013 from ongoing land degradation and inadequate monitoring to the entrenched focus on disciplinary excellence in scientific institutions, which continues to marginalize cross-cutting and collaborative approaches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Echoing this, <strong>Dr. Pamela McElwee<\/strong> (Rutgers University) presented the IPBES Nexus Assessment as an effort to reframe assessments around actionable solutions. \u201c<em>We didn\u2019t want to produce another state-of-the-problem report,\u201d <\/em>she said<em>. \u201cSo we dedicated half the report to concrete, implementable options \u2014 from agroecological practices to urban biodiversity strategies.<\/em>\u201d The assessment also expanded participation, bringing in early-career researchers and Indigenous knowledge holders. \u201c<em>The point wasn\u2019t just to be inclusive \u2014 it was to make the science better, more usable, and more just<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Institutions matter: Building structures that connect science and decision-making\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While knowledge abounds, the real challenge lies in ensuring that it can be used effectively \u2013 especially when windows for political action are short. As <strong>Dr. Marianne Beisheim<\/strong> put it: \u201c<em>To be relevant, science must be ready when political attention is high.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with <strong>Dr. Annekathrin Ellersiek<\/strong>, she described Germany\u2019s initiative to coordinate 20 scientific advisory councils, many of which had never previously worked on the SDGs. Through biannual structured dialogue, the councils have co-authored joint positions and contributed to national reporting processes, including Germany\u2019s Vienna Report on sustainability transformation. \u201c<em>It\u2019s about creating ownership<\/em>,\u201d said Elleriek, \u201c<em>even when political will is low. The platform brings together scientists, private sector actors, and civil society to co-develop sustainability strategies \u2013 particularly in areas like energy, climate, and sustainable consumption. \u201c<em>We use participatory methods, alignment tools, and open access data to ground decisions,<\/em>\u201d she explained. Yet Diaz was candid about the gaps: \u201c<em>Peer review takes time \u2013 politics doesn\u2019t wait. There\u2019s a disconnect between the rhythms of science and the urgency of implementation<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that \u201c<em>we need to break silos not only between sectors, but within science itself<\/em>,\u201d pointing out that most scientists lack training in public communication. \u201c<em>The knowledge exists, but it often doesn\u2019t leave the room it was generated in,<\/em>\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Babatunde Abidoye<\/strong> highlighted UNDP\u2019s role in utilizing science and AI to support countries with their national planning and commitments. He pointed to UNDP\u2019s <strong>SDG Push Diagnostics tool<\/strong>, \u201c<em>using AI and science to bring all policy and planning information together to analyze them to find gaps within the SDGs<\/em>\u201d; insights that have shaped the <em>SDG Integrated Insights Reports<\/em>. Building on this foundation, UNDP\u2019s most recent work explores the intersection of climate ambition and development priorities through the <em>NDC x SDG Insights Reports<\/em>, supporting countries in crafting more integrated and forward-looking strategies for their <strong>NDC 3.0<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youth engagement: Not just present, but shaping the agenda\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the defining characteristics of Science Day 2025 was the visibility and influence of young scientists and students. Most of the questions and interventions during Q&amp;A came from participants under 30 \u2013 many of them affiliated with the UN\u2019s Major Groups or early-career science networks. But he also cautioned that \u201c<em>while scientists are globally connected, the interfaces between science and policy remain fragmented and fragile.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Daniel Goroff<\/strong> (Sloan Foundation) proposed a concrete innovation: \u201c<em>Let\u2019s build pop-up journals \u2013 fast-cycle, peer-reviewed forums that respond directly to questions policy-makers are asking.<\/em>\u201d It\u2019s not about publishing more, he said, but publishing with purpose: \u201c<em>Build the track for the train you\u2019re trying to fuel.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day\u2019s final sessions also highlighted systemic enablers. <strong>Dr. Astra Bonini<\/strong> (UN DESA) underscored the need for synergy across goals. \u201c<em>We can\u2019t afford to chase 17 targets in 17 directions,<\/em>\u201d she said. \u201c<em>We need approaches that deliver multiple wins simultaneously \u2013 and we need science to help us find them.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A space for solutions \u2013 and for the systems that unlock them\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Science Day 2025 was more than a sideline event to the HLPF. It demonstrated the growing demand for independent, boundary-spanning spaces that bridge knowledge and action. As multiple speakers emphasized, such spaces are rare \u2013 and need to be cultivated, not just convened. The 2025 edition not only built on the insights and relationships established in previous years but also responded to a shared recognition: achieving the SDGs will require renewed approaches to collaboration, stronger interfaces between science and policy, and a clearer commitment to enabling conditions for action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that spirit, Science Day 2025 was not just a moment of reflection, but an invitation \u2013 to reaffirm the value of scientific knowledge as a public good, to strengthen the means by which it informs decision-making, and to begin imagining the systems and partnerships needed for the decades ahead. It is a space to unlock solutions, today \u2014 and a platform to co-create the pathways to tomorrow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-gray-light-2-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<style id=\"wpforms-css-vars-63267\">\n\t\t\t\t#wpforms-63267
