{"id":13532,"date":"2020-03-13T18:19:50","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T18:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.science\/?page_id=13532"},"modified":"2025-08-06T11:28:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T11:28:39","slug":"ocean","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/council.science\/our-work\/ocean\/","title":{"rendered":"Global science for the Ocean Decade: 2021-2030\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This Decade provides a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries\u2019 actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key planned actions include promoting the Ocean Decade among the scientific community, contributing to Decade preparations, accelerating scientific initiatives, and exploring opportunities for joint fundraising for scientific research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activities and impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5 December 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceandecade.org\/documents\/oceandecade_unomnibusresolution_extract_en_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development<\/a>, to be held from 2021 to 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>February 2020: the ISC and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO), joined forces for the Decade by <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/current\/news\/new-agreement-mobilizes-global-science-for-the-ocean-decade\/\">signing a Memorandum of Understanding<\/a>. the International Science Council has traditionally cooperated with UNESCO\u2019s IOC, which has a global membership of 150 countries, in the fields of ocean sciences, climate sciences and related observations, and capacity development. In particular, the two Paris-based organizations helped found and remain at the helm of two key international ocean science initiatives: the <a href=\"https:\/\/goosocean.org\/\">Global Ocean Observing System<\/a> (GOOS), a worldwide collaborative network of in situ and satellite observing systems, governments, UN agencies and individual scientists; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/scor-int.org\/\">Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research<\/a> (SCOR), an international body anchored within the ISC whose mandate is to address interdisciplinary science questions related to the ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2020: The ISC contributed to a series of webinars to explore how the co-design and co-delivery of actions for the Ocean Decade could help contribute much-needed solutions for a healthy Ocean. The findings from the webinars are summarized in the 2021 publication <em><a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/current\/blog\/co-design-science-for-the-ocean-decade\/\">Co-designing the science we need for the Ocean we want<\/a><\/em> with input from the ISC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022: ISC Members <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/current\/blog\/key-takeaways-unoc-2022\/\">share key take-aways<\/a> from the 2022 UN Ocean Conference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2025: The ISC actively contributed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/unoc3-2025\/\">2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC)<\/a>, co-chaired by France and Costa Rica, and taking place in Nice from 9 to 13 June 2025. Through its ocean expert group and extensive scientific networks, the ISC ensured that evidence-based solutions and interdisciplinary insights shape the conference
