{"id":18998,"date":"2020-07-06T14:35:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-06T14:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.science\/?page_id=18998"},"modified":"2025-07-28T14:36:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T14:36:50","slug":"human-development","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/council.science\/our-work\/human-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Rethinking human development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 30 years since the UN\u2019s first Human Development Report was published in 1990, our world has changed dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humanity faces ongoing and impending crises on all fronts \u2013 ecological, health, political and economic. Driven by new technology, socio-political developments and profound environmental changes, the ways in which we understand ourselves, our connections to local and global societies and to our planet itself have been upended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This calls for a fundamental rethinking of human development. To take on this challenge, the ISC has partnered with the UN Development Programme (UNDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activities and impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rethinking Human Development project includes a critical review of the human development paradigm to reflect an evolving landscape. It provides a conceptual framework to guide analysis, measurement and decision-making to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>March \u2013 June 2020: Global consultation to gather insight from experts with diverse disciplinary and geographical backgrounds, as well as an open call for broader community input.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>November 2020: <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/human-development-dialogue\/\">A global relay of webinars<\/a>, starting on World Science Day and continuing into 2021, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/human-development-dialogue\/\">international level<\/a> as well as focusing on regions including <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/regional-dialogue-on-rethinking-human-development-for-todays-world-voices-from-sub-saharan-africa-2\/\">Sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/regional-dialogue-on-rethinking-human-development-for-todays-world-voices-from-sub-saharan-africa\/\">Asia-Pacific<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/events\/human-development-dialogue\/\">elsewhere<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>November 2020: Release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/publications\/conversations-on-rethinking-human-development-2\/\">\u201cConversations on Rethinking Human Development\u201d<\/a> publication and <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/actionplan\/human-development\/\">multimedia project<\/a>, which built on ideas gathered in the global consultation. The multimedia report won a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/current\/news\/lovie-awards-2021\/\">Lovie award<\/a> for \u2018website craft and best writing\u2019. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2021 \u2013 2023: We explored how to rethink the measurement of human development, while using innovative, inclusive methodologies to gather new narratives and voices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>July 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/publications\/human-development-index\/\">&#8216;How do we measure wellbeing?
