Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Frontiers Research Foundation<\/a> has launched the Planet Prize to recognize and reward exceptional scientists. Three prizes worth a total of CHF 3 million (~USD $3.2m) are awarded to the world\u2019s most innovative sustainability scientists from any domain who are able to offer globally scalable solutions which protect and restore planetary health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The Nine Planetary Boundaries <\/h2>\n
\n

The submitted research must offer solutions addressing at\u00a0least one of nine planetary boundaries<\/strong>\u00a0and have the potential for measurable global impact.\u00a0Sustainability scientists have identified nine planetary boundaries that we cannot cross without risking the collapse of life on Earth as we know it.\u00a0Johan Rockstr\u00f6m<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Owen Gaffney<\/a>\u00a0have described these boundaries in their book\u00a0Breaking Boundaries<\/a>, as well as on the website of the\u00a0Stockholm Resilience Centre<\/a>. Action is needed now to prevent us from crossing these boundaries and, where we have already transgressed them, to guide a safe and just transformation of the world back to within Planetary Boundaries.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n
