The hope is that the treaty, once finalized and implemented, will have far-reaching effects in addressing the problem of plastic pollution, which is affecting not only our oceans but also the land and the health of humans and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Science Council (ISC) has been contributing integrated scientific inputs through policy briefs and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps1.unep.org\/resolutions\/uploads\/final_st_major_group_statement_written_rv2_20221129_0_0.pdf\">statements<\/a>. The ISC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v8yQgZOdliQ&amp;t=9967s\">facilitated <\/a>the participation of the scientific community, which called for a prominent role for scientific evidence and monitoring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>May &#8211; June 2023<br><\/strong>The <a href=\"\/blog\/the-isc-at-the-second-session-of-the-intergovernmental-negotiating-committee-on-plastic-pollution\/\">second meeting<\/a> takes place in France, followed by regional consultations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>November 2023<\/strong><br>In preparation for the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, the ISC released a <a href=\"\/publications\/policy-brief-tackle-global-plastic-pollution\/\">policy brief<\/a> calling for the urgent establishment of a robust science-policy-society interface to tackle the persistent and long-term issue of global plastic pollution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>February 2024<\/strong><br>The ISC <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/blog\/establishment-isc-plastic-pollution-expert-group\/\">established<\/a> an expert group on plastic pollution, following a call for nominations to ISC Members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>May 2024<\/strong><br>The ISC expert group produced a high-level commentary for the fourth session of the INC-4: pollution<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>November 2024<br><\/strong>In the lead up to the INC-5, the ISC experts engaged in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/inc-plastic-pollution\/ioeeg\">intersessional work<\/a>, working closely with Member States and supporting them with the latest scientific
