Dr. Carlos Alberto Vargas obtained his BSc in Geology from the University of Caldas (Colombia), a MSc. in Physics in the Technological University of Pereira (Colombia) and a Doctor Degree in Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonya (Spain). He previously worked for the Geologial Survey of Colombia and the National Hydrocarbons of Colombia and as the Leader of the Geophysics Research Group and Full Professor of Seismology, Geodynamics and Basin Analysis at the University Nacional de Colombia. He was appointed as the President of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences in August 2025.
His area of scientific interest is Seismic propagation, MT exploration, fluid migration, stress regimen. On public policy is interested in Natural Resources, Climate Change and Social Impacts of these phenomena.
