Segomotso Bagwasi

Researcher

Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI)

Involvement at the ISC

Background

Dr Segomotso Bagwasi is a seasoned researcher with over 14 years in Chemistry and Material Science, specializing in nanotechnology and catalysis (heterogeneous and photocatalysis). Currently, she is a researcher at Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), Nanomaterials Division, under the Specialty Chemicals group, where she develops environmental remediation solutions (2014 – present). Segomotso synthesizes materials for CO₂ capture and conversion to useful chemicals and fuels. Initially, she developed ceramic water filters for microbial removal from water.

Prior to joining BITRI, Segomotso was a senior technician at Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (2000-2014), where she provided analytical services for soil, plants and animal samples for research cadre, conducted and assessed laboratory practical lessons for students. Dr Bagwasi is competent in operation and carrying out analysis using ICP-MS, AAS, XRD, XRF, BET analytical techniques.

Segomotso holds a Doctor of Engineering in Applied Chemistry (photocatalysis), East China University of Science and Technology, China (2009-2012), an MSc in Technology (Chemical Analysis and Laboratory Management from University of New South Wales, Australia (2004-2005) and a BSc in Chemistry and Environmental Science, University of Botswana (1994-1998). For her PhD, she developed TiO₂ photocatalysts for degrading organic pollutants in water. She currently serves as a Board Member (Treasurer) of the Botswana Academy of Science, a peer reviewer for reputable journals and an external examiner for PhD theses and MSc dissertations. She is also a member of the Chemical Society of Botswana and the Catalysis Society of South Africa.

Her research interests include catalysis, nanotechnology, material science and electro-chemistry.
