Gabriella Viero is an accomplished biomedical scientist and a dedicated advocate for international scientific diplomacy. Dr. Viero brings over 18 years of experience in biomedical sciences and currently serves as Research Director, Group Leader, and Principal Investigator at the Institute of Biophysics (CNR, Italy). Her research on translational control of gene expression and neurodegenerative diseases is internationally recognized, with over 60 high-impact publications and patents.
She has led multiple national and international projects, demonstrating remarkable leadership and coordination skills. Her interdisciplinary approach—integrating biophysics, biochemistry, mathematics, and cell biology—has contributed to groundbreaking insights into disease mechanisms.
Since winning a grant to found the patented start-up IMMAGINA – Ribo-Lace, where she served as scientific advisor until 2022, she has continued to lead her CNR research group and, since 2023, coordinate a public–private initiative.
Although relatively new to the field of science diplomacy, she has actively engaged through participation in the SciDiploHub program (Barcelona) and the Limes School of Geopolitics (Rome). Since 2021, she has served as an elected Councilor of the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB), where she contributes to the Big Data and Women in Science task forces. As IUPAB’s designated delegate to ISC, she has participated in key ISC activities, including the 2023 Mid-Year Meeting in Paris and the 2025 Global Knowledge Dialogue and ISC-GA in Oman, where she served as member of the Resolutions Committee.
In 2024, she joined the ISC’s Global Roster of Experts and is actively promoting science diplomacy through an innovative course for PhD students in the International Doctoral Program in Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Trento (Italy).
Her passion, scientific experience, and intercultural insight can make a meaningful and original contribution to the committee and to the wider mission of the ISC.
