Roula M. Abdel-Massih is a Clinical Professor and Community Educator at Central Michigan University (USA). She previously served as Director of Product Development at GBAC/ISSA, where she developed educational programs supporting infection prevention, public health, and hygiene practices. From 2003 to 2021, she was a faculty member at the University of Balamand in Lebanon and served as Chair of the Department of Biology (2008–2011).
She earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the American University of Beirut and her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Glasgow (UK). Her research focuses on bioactive compounds from natural sources, particularly their antibacterial and antiproliferative properties. She has also investigated the genotoxic effects of environmental pollutants, and the biological impacts of chemical exposures associated with endocrine disruption.
Dr. Abdel-Massih has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, presented at 80+ conferences, and supervised over 30 graduate students. She has secured funding from both local and international sources. She was awarded the TWAS-TYAN Collaborative Grant and conducted research at Emory University in 2019.
She was a TWAS Young Affiliate (2011–2015) and has served as Co-chair of the TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN) since 2021. She was selected for Japan’s STS Forum Future Leaders program (2015) and was a U.S. National Academies Education Fellow (2015–2016). She holds IFBA certification in Biorisk Management and ISO 35001 training. She completed Harvard’s APLD Program (2016) and its Global Public Health Leadership course (2025). She is also a Fellow of the International Science Council.
