On 7 June 2025, the ISC Regional Focal Point for Latin America and the Caribbean (RFP-LAC) held the first official meeting of its newly established Operational Committees, marking the launch of a regional pilot initiative aimed at strengthening collaborative action and regional representation within the International Science Council.

This milestone follows the recent call for participation in the Operational Committees, designed to bring together diverse voices across Latin America and the Caribbean to support the implementation of the RFP-LAC’s Regional Action Plan and the ISC’s global strategic priorities. Read the call here.

A Pilot for Regional Action

The opening session welcomed members from across the region and beyond, highlighting the significance of their engagement and collective contribution to this pioneering effort. The pilot seeks to enhance inclusion, responsiveness, and regional coordination in science-policy engagement and knowledge mobilization efforts.

Meeting Objectives

  • Present the Regional Action Plan and work plans
  • Outline the Terms of Reference and coordination model
  • Clarify roles, expectations, and ways of working
  • Begin co-designing the next steps

Session Highlights

  • Anne Thieme, Membership Liaison Officer from ISC Headquarters offered an overview of the Council’s global governance and programs, emphasizing the role of Regional Focal Points in amplifying regional voices.
  • Carolina Santacruz, Senior Science Officer of the ISC RFP-LAC, presented the operational structure and working principles of the five Committees: Science Policy & Freedom and Responsibility in Science, Capacity Building & Events, Fundraising & Membership, Communication, and Partnerships.
  • An open floor discussion encouraged reflections, questions, and suggestions. It was emphasized the importance of co-creation, flexibility, and the need for capacity building across diverse contexts.

The meeting closed with a reaffirmation of the Committees’ collaborative spirit and their shared commitment to advancing science as a global public good—rooted in regional realities and connected to global challenges.
