Dr. Phoon-Kok Kwang – Databases for trustworthy data-centric geotechnics
This lecture argues that machine learning and artificial intelligence in geotechnical engineering should be developed within a balanced agenda called trustworthy data-centric geotechnics (Phoon 2024). The four elements of trustworthy data-centric geotechnics are: (1) data centricity, (2) fit for (and transform) practice, (3) geotechnical context, and (4) trust. Effective algorithms are necessary, but not sufficient for advancing the frontiers of geotechnical practice.
Data is the core of trustworthy data-centric geotechnics. This lecture surveys databases covering site characterization (Phoon and Tang 2025) and performance of geotechnical structures (Tang and Phoon 2025). Application of site characterization databases to solve a fundamental site recognition challenge in practice is discussed (Phoon et al. 2025).
Dr. Jianye Ching 卿建業 – Impact of databases on research and practice in geotechnical engineering
This lecture summarizes the current impact of geotechnical databases to research and practice, focusing on how these databases help researchers identify key challenges in geotechnical data analytics. The following aspects of the impact will be mentioned: (a) ISSMGE TC304 state-of-the-art report; (b) data-centric geotechnics; (c) benchmarking examples; and (d) education.
