Background

Roberta D’Alessandro is Professor and Chair of Linguistics at Utrecht University, a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, and a knight of the Order of the Star of Italy.

A specialist in syntactic variation and minority languages, her research bridges theoretical linguistics and language policy. She has led major international initiatives, including an ERC-funded project and the Heritage Language Syntax platform, and founded several conferences promoting minority language research.

Committed to open science, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of Isogloss, the first diamond Open Access journal in Romance linguistics with broad Global South representation. She also edits an open-access book series and participates in multiple Open Access initiatives.

Her policy contributions include co-authoring the Dutch Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2018) and advising the European Commission on science communication and ethics through various JRC initiatives. She mentors early career researchers worldwide through the “Your Academic Auntie” initiative, fostering inclusive academic communities and advocating for equitable publication standards in the humanities.
