Call for nominations of Members for the Advisory Council of the Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific 

In July 2023, the ISC signed an agreement with the Australian Academy of Sciences to enable the establishment, administration, and management of an ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific (RFP-AP) for the period of 2023 to 2028. In addition to support from the ISC, the RFP-AP is supported by a generous grant from the Australian Government.  

The ISC is now expanding the current Advisory Council and is seeking nominations for exceptional candidates from the following sectors to serve on the ISC RFP-AP Advisory Council:  

• Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Representatives of independent, non-profit groups working locally, nationally, or internationally to address science-oriented issues.  

• Philanthropy: Representatives of foundations, families or individuals using philanthropic means to support causes related to science and/or public good.  

• Governments: Representatives of national, regional, or local public authorities responsible for setting policies and providing services. 

• Multilateral Organizations: International bodies formed by multiple countries that work together to address global challenges, coordinate policy, or provide aid and resources. 

• Industry: Businesses and private sector entities — from small firms to large corporations — that produce goods, deliver services, and drive economic activity. 

Structure

The ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific operates under the advice and guidance of an eight-member Advisory Council, which is co-chaired by Frances Separovic (Foreign Secretary of the Australian Academy of Science). The Advisory Council is supported by a Secretariat, which is based at the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra Australia and directed by Ronit Prawer.

The current RFP-AP Advisory Council comprises of one representative from each of the four sub-regions: 

• South Asia

• East Asia

• Southeast Asia

• Oceania

In addition, there are two strategic Advisory Council members to ensure discipline and gender diversity and to strengthen strategic partnerships. 

Member engagement

To ensure the RFP-AP can receive broad input from the Asia-Pacific region, virtual meetings with the Advisory Council and the ISC membership will be conducted twice per year, and one meeting will take place in person. These provide an opportunity to:  

• Hear about current and planned program activities of the RFP-AP,  

• Provide input towards the programs and priorities of the RFP-AP,  

• Communicate country and organisational priorities and programs among other Members, and 

• Support regional activities and ensure regional priorities are heard at the ISC global level.  

Elegibility

Nominations from anywhere in Asia and the Pacific are welcome. We welcome nominations from the following sectors: NGOs, Philanthropy, Governments, Multilateral Organizations and Industry. 

The eligibility and requirements to become a member of the Advisory Council are:  

• Experience in developing regional and/or national science networks 

• Experience in science-policy and science-and-society interactions 

• Having outstanding networks and convening power in the scientific, policy, business, or any other sector relevant to the ISC’s mission and objectives 

While involvement with an ISC Member organization in Asia and the Pacific is highly desirable, it is not a requirement for nomination to the Advisory Council. The nominee must, however, be nominated by an ISC Member organization.
