She is enlisted in the Stanford World Ranking Top 2% Scientists 2022. The asteroid “9826 Ehrenfreund 2114 T-3” bears her name.

By uniting more than 14,000 scientists and researchers worldwide, the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), a Member of the International Science Council (ISC), plays a crucial role in fostering global collaboration in space science. As a neutral and dynamic platform for scientists from across the globe, COSPAR facilitates knowledge exchange, aligns research priorities, and helps overcome barriers in the pursuit of scientific advancement for the benefit of all.
Founded in 1958 under the auspices of the International Council of Scientific Unions (now the International Science Council), COSPAR was created during the Cold War with a unique mandate: to ensure the free exchange of scientific information related to space research, regardless of geopolitical divisions. More than six decades later, that mission remains profoundly relevant.
Today, COSPAR brings together space scientists, engineers and students from diverse backgrounds and institutions, enabling collaboration across national and disciplinary boundaries. At the heart of COSPAR’s enduring success is its commitment to excellence and neutrality. It does not take political positions or align with any national agenda. Instead, it serves as a trusted forum where scientific ideas can be exchanged freely, through scientific assemblies, symposia, and its many panels and commissions. This neutrality promotes equitable participation from countries with varying space capabilities and ensures that emerging space nations can contribute meaningfully to global dialogue and learn.
Space science is inherently interdisciplinary. From heliophysics to planetary protection, understanding our Solar System and the universe requires knowledge from astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. COSPAR actively encourages this cross-collaboration of disciplines by organizing working groups, scientific panels, and collaborative projects that merge expertise from different fields. For instance, the Panel on Planetary Protection brings together microbiologists and engineers to develop internationally accepted guidelines for protecting celestial bodies from biological contamination during space missions.
COSPAR also plays a key role in fostering coordination among international space agencies, research institutions, and private-sector actors. Through these efforts, missions can build upon one another’s findings, reducing duplication and maximizing scientific return.
