Armenia, National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA)

The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia has been a member since 1992.

The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA) was founded in 1943 as an independent, self-governing organization. Today, the Academy includes more than 30 institutes, technological centers and other scientific units where fundamental and applied research is carried out in the fields of natural, technical and humanitarian sciences.
Over the 80 years of its existence, NAS RA has contributed greatly to the scientific and technological progress of Armenia, to the development of the economy, the strengthening of defensive capacity, and the formation of a progressive society.

Today, the Academy with its system of organizations is considered a powerful scientific potential, the effective use of which will contribute substantially to the sustainable development of the Republic of Armenia, strengthening the state and improving the welfare of society.

As a state scientific organization NAS RA unifies the scientific and research institutes, subsidiary services and governing body – the Presidium has five scientific divisions on particular areas of science: 

  • Division of Mathematical and Technical Sciences,
  • Division of Physics and Astrophysics,
  • Division of Natural Sciences,
  • Division of Chemistry and Earth Sciences,
  • Division of Armenology and Social Sciences.

More than 34 scientific institutions and other organizations are included in these Divisions. The Academy has 72 members and 147 foreign and honorary members representing five scientific divisions. The Academy has a staff consisting over 3800 people, among which there are about 340 doctors of sciences, about 1100 candidates of sciences.

NAS RA Presidium has cooperation agreements and memorandums with 30 scientific centers of 26 countries. Institutions have active cooperation agreements and memorandums with more than 150 scientific centers, universities and other organizations of about 40 countries of the world.
NAS RA Institutions realize more than 60 international grant projects annually, including projects financed by:

  • Cha Zuckerberg Initiative
  • BMBF
  • ERASMUS+

NAS RA is a member of:

  • IAAS/ International Association of Academies of Sciences

  • ALLEA/ All European Academies
  • ANSO/ Alliance of International Science Organizations
